Registering a trailer around Canberra
Canberra sits on a border, and which side of it you live on changes who you register with. Both jurisdictions require a trailer used on the road to be registered, and both need the trailer to have identifying details before that can happen.
ACT or NSW — which one?
You register where the trailer is garaged, not where you bought it. An ACT address registers through Access Canberra; Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong and Bungendore register through Service NSW. A trailer bought in Queanbeyan and kept in Weston is an ACT registration.
What a new trailer needs
A new trailer needs its identifying details established before it can be registered — a VIN and a compliance plate carrying the weight figures. A reputable maker supplies this as part of the build and gives you the paperwork to take to the registry. If a seller is vague about this, walk away.
Buying a used trailer
Check that the plate is present and legible, that the details match the paperwork, and that there is no money owing against it. Look hard at the chassis rails and the coupling, not the paint — a repaint hides a lot, and a trailer with no identifying details can be genuinely difficult to register.
Costs and inspections
Registration is charged by weight category, so a heavier trailer costs more each year. That is worth knowing before you size up “just in case” — see choosing a trailer. Inspection requirements differ between the ACT and NSW and change from time to time.
Keeping it registrable
An inspection looks at lights, brakes, tyres, the coupling, safety chains and the structure. All of them are ordinary service items, and all of them are cheaper to keep on top of than to fix under time pressure the week rego is due — see servicing and repairs.
Moving across the border
If you move between the ACT and NSW, the trailer’s registration follows you and has to be transferred to the new jurisdiction. It is a routine process, but it is not automatic — and an unregistered trailer is not insured.
