Hiring a trailer vs buying one in Canberra
What a hire actually costs around Canberra and Queanbeyan, the costs each side hides, the rough point where owning starts to pay, and what an older trailer costs to keep on the road.
Count your days, not your dollars
Hiring wins
A one-off move, a fridge from Fyshwick, two or three tip runs a year, a mattress for a relative in Googong. If you can book a day ahead and the trailer comes back by evening, hire.
Buying wins
A trade that carries gear most weeks, a block with regular green waste, a camper or boat that lives on its own trailer, or coast trips every summer. The deciding factor is having the trailer in the driveway when the job turns up.
In between
Six to twelve days a year is the grey zone. Add up a year of hire, compare it with the keep costs below, and be honest about how often the trailer would really move.
What hire costs around Canberra
Indicative figures from published price lists, checked 30 October 2026.
Local hire yards
Canberra Trailer Hire in Wanniassa lists a 6x4 caged trailer at $60 for 9 to 24 hours, a 7x4 at $70 and an 8x5 at $80, with a $103 deposit and a two-day rate of $100 to $150. A week on the 8x5 is $260. Capital Trailer Hire lists $50, $70 and $100 for the same three sizes for up to 24 hours, with a $100 deposit. Call it around $50 to $100 a day depending on size.
Peer-to-peer platforms
Trailer Connect and Local Trailer Hire list private owners' trailers around Canberra from around $45 to $72 a day for cage and box trailers, and around $70 to $120 for car trailers. Owners set their own rates, a photo condition report is done at pickup and return, and the platforms warn that March and September moving season books out.
Bunnings and the national hire firms
Bunnings offers a free courtesy trailer for up to two hours with a licence and a card, enough to get a purchase home but not a tip run. Kennards Hire has Canberra branches and quotes trailers by branch and dates when you book, so there is no flat published figure to give you.
Where owning starts to pay
At around $80 a day for an 8x5, ten hire days a year is around $800 and twenty is around $1,600. Against that, owning costs rego every year, an inspection when the rules call for one, somewhere to park it, and consumables (tyres, bearings, lights) that wear whether or not you use it. Spread the purchase price over the years you will realistically keep it, add the yearly keep costs, and if hire days still cost more, buy.
Size matters more than you'd think: ACT rego is charged by weight and a heavier trailer costs more every year. Choosing a trailer covers sizing. If you are weighing up a new build, a builder's spec page such as Resort Trailers' build-your-trailer page shows what each option adds in weight.
What each side leaves off the price tag
Hire: the deposit, the excess, and the clock
A deposit of around $100 is held on your card and takes days to come back. The insurance position varies: one yard describes its trailers as insured for all jobs without stating an excess, another says nothing, and peer-to-peer platforms leave it to the owner's listing. Ask what you are liable for before you tow. Returns run to the clock: one Canberra yard only hands over and takes back trailers between 8am and 7pm, so a Sunday afternoon tip run ends with a Monday return and another day's charge. Weekends and moving months book out, a dirty trailer can cost a cleaning fee, and every hire is two trips: collect, return.
Own: rego, storage, servicing, tyres
Rego is yearly in both the ACT and NSW; our ACT trailer rego guide covers the fee cut and the inspection rules. In NSW most trailers over five years old need a yearly safety check, $27 without brakes or $41 with brakes from 1 July 2026. Storage is a real cost in a townhouse or a block of units, and a trailer left on the street collects attention. Bearings, lights, the coupling and brakes need looking at even if the trailer barely moves, and tyres age out before they wear out; see servicing and repairs. Disposing of an old tyre at an ACT centre is $18.05 clean and off the rim, $26.40 dirty or on the rim.
Used: keeping an older trailer registrable
A cheap used trailer is cheap until it fails an inspection. In the ACT a used trailer more than six years old needs an inspection at transfer, and so does one unregistered for over 12 months or last registered interstate. In NSW an unregistered trailer needs a blue slip, then the yearly pink slip once it passes five years from its compliance plate. What fails is the ordinary stuff: lights, tyres, the coupling, safety chains and rust in the drawbar. Budget for that before the sale and read registering a trailer in the ACT and NSW for the paperwork.
Tip runs, the border and the coast
Mugga Lane and Mitchell
Both resource management centres open 7.30am to 5pm seven days, closed Good Friday and Christmas Day. From 1 July 2026 a household load under half a tonne costs $34.60 for a sedan with a trailer, a ute or a wagon, and $48.65 for a ute or wagon with a trailer or a sedan with a caged trailer. Half a tonne or more is charged by weight at $121.75 a tonne for ACT residents. Add a $60 to $100 hire and a tip run with a hired trailer costs around $100 to $150; with your own trailer it is the gate fee.
Across the border
Canberra hire yards serve Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong, and one lists ACT, NSW and Victoria as fine to travel. One-way hire is not offered. If you own, the trailer is registered where it is garaged, so a Queanbeyan trailer goes through Service NSW even if it only ever drives in the ACT.
Coast trips
A long weekend at the coast is a multi-day hire, so look at the two-day and weekly rates, not the 24-hour one. Loaded trailers on the Clyde Mountain descent are where brakes and ball weight matter; check towing capacity before you load up, hired or owned.
